Didi Chuxing-Making Headway in the Global Ridesharing Market

<<Previous Page

INTRODUCTION

In December 2017, China-based ride hailing service provider Didi Chuxing (Didi), announced that it had secured finance of more than US$ 4 billion. Analysts said that the massive funding round would help Didi further spread into international markets. Apart from international expansion, the new capital would go toward development of Artificial Intelligence technology to build self-driving vehicle systems.

Didi was formed after the merger of two Chinese companies Didi Dache (Dache) and Kuaidi Dache (Kuadi) that offered both mobile taxi-hailing apps and private-car hailing services. Both entities merged in 2015, with the resultant company becoming a leading platform for taxi hailing services in China. Didi acquired US-based Uber Technologies’ Chinese operations in 2016, thereby further consolidating its position in the Chinese market.
